Whether you’re stopping for a short break or staying longer to explore the region, Habarana serves as an ideal starting point for unforgettable experiences.  Main places of attractions are outlined here. 

Sigiriya Rock

Approx. 15 km) – One of Sri Lanka’s most iconic landmarks.

Sigiriya, also known as Lion Rock, is an ancient rock fortress and UNESCO World Heritage Site located in central Sri Lanka. Rising 200 meters (660 feet) above the surrounding plains, this massive rock formation is one of the country’s most iconic landmarks, celebrated for its historical, archaeological, and architectural significance.

Dambulla Cave Temple

(Approx. 20 km) – A stunning cave temple with Buddhist murals and statues.

The most famous attraction in Dambulla is the Dambulla Cave Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This temple complex consists of five main caves containing Buddha statues, murals, and ancient paintings dating back to the 1st century BCE. The artwork inside the caves depicts various scenes from Buddha’s life and is considered some of the finest in Sri Lanka.

Polonnaruwa

(Approx. 45 km) – An ancient city with well-preserved ruins of palaces, temples, and stupas.

Polonnaruwa is an ancient city in Sri Lanka, known for its rich history, well-preserved ruins, and cultural significance. It served as the second capital of Sri Lanka after the fall of Anuradhapura and flourished between the 11th and 13th centuries under the reign of the Chola and Sinhalese kings. Today, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a popular tourist destination.

Minneriya , Kaudull & Hurulu Eco Park

Minneriya National Park

Minneriya National Park is best known for “The Gathering,” one of the world’s largest wild elephant gatherings. During the dry season (July–October), hundreds of elephants congregate near the Minneriya Tank to drink water and graze, providing an incredible wildlife spectacle.

  • Location: Between Habarana and Polonnaruwa
  • Best Time to Visit: July to October (elephant gathering)
  • Wildlife: Elephants, leopards (rare sightings), deer, crocodiles, and over 150 bird species

Kaudulla National Park

Located close to Minneriya, Kaudulla is another great spot for elephant safaris. When water levels drop in Minneriya, elephants move to Kaudulla, making it a good alternative if you want to avoid large crowds.

  • Location: North of Minneriya, near Habarana
  • Best Time to Visit: August to December
  • Wildlife: Elephants, sloth bears, deer, peacocks, and various bird species

Hurulu Eco Park (Habarana Eco Park)

Hurulu Eco Park is a lesser-known but excellent safari alternative, especially during peak seasons. Since it shares elephant corridors with Minneriya and Kaudulla, you still have a high chance of spotting elephants while enjoying a quieter and more private experience.

  • Location: Near Habarana
  • Best Time to Visit: Year-round
  • Wildlife: Elephants, leopards (rare), sambar deer, monkeys, and a variety of birds

Ritigala

Approximately 20 km

Ritigala,  is an ancient Buddhist monastery and archaeological site with significant historical importance. It served as a center for meditation and spiritual retreat for monks, dating back to the first century BCE. The site is renowned for its unique architecture and well-preserved ruins, offering insights into the religious and cultural practices of ancient Sri Lankan society.
